“Every other sport, even snowboarding and skateboarding, had a format where the best players in the world could play against the each other,” said poker pro Annie Duke. “There’s a lot of value to limiting your field, both for the player experience and for the fan experience.”
The Epic Poker League broadcasts are aiming to give viewers the feel of watching the Olympics, where each player's life profile will be chronicled previous to to their playing in the tournament. One of the first players to be featured is Eugene Katchalov, who escaped the Ukraine at a time when the former Soviet Union was collapsing.
Just last week, two of the most popular players scheduled to play in the Epic Poker League were banned from the roster-Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Howard Lederer. Both of these players were stripped of the five year player cards, prohibiting them from playing in the EPL events.
