Before the internet contributed to globalize the game and give the same chances to play online to everyone in the world the best poker players were surely americans. Poker was born as an all-american game so they have been staying avant-guard because they had more chances to practice live poker in casinos.
If we check the history results of the WSOP events we can see that in decades ago quite often the bracelets were won by Nevadan residents in particular. This is because they had more easy chance to practice than others fellow national citizens or foreign citizens.
But now the nationality is becoming ever less relevant, for example we had an Italian player at the final table of the WSOP main event this year, a thing that had never happened before.
